Pangong Tso, at an altitude of 4,218 m above sea level, is the largest of the Changthang lakes, occupying an area of about 700 km2.

Situated about 160 km east of Leh, and 175 km2 wide part of lake lies in Indian territory, while the rest finds itself in China.

Pangong Tso is an enclosed basin and is brackish in nature. This long and narrow expanse of deep blue water is flanked on the north by the Changchenmo range and the Pangong Mountains, while an offshoot of the Ladakh range bounds its southern edge.


There is no marine life; however, one can see migratory birds like Gulls, Brahmin ducks and the occasional mallard breeding at the small junctions of inlet streams.
